The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) asked the National Research Council to assess its disability determination process for mental retardation. The Committee on Disability Determination for Mental Retardation was formed to evaluate the existing determination process in the context of state-of-the-art scientific knowledge and clinical practice.
